RIP MJ - Omega NYC - Adriana Evans Mixed

Unlike many blogs who have (and will post) hastily done tribute mixes to Michael's legacy by deejays who more than likely never played a MJ tune with any frequency. You won't find that here on my blog. That behavior seems like more of same thing that occurred while MJ was alive....people using his fame to gain some shine for themselves.

I will instead relate a song I think reflects Michael Jackson's talent and legacy. This is one of my favorites and upon listening to it reminds one of why Michael was such musical legend. The way his voice envelopes the beat. The way he drifts between restrained emotion to his passionate high notes just draws the listener into world of Michael's musical genius. Now I bring you not an older song but a more recent one produced by Michael Jackson & Andre Harris. Though not written by Michael but by Floetry's Marsha Ambrosius. It is still a true reflection of MJ's legacy, What it was and what it could have been.

Why Adriana Evans never gained mainstream success is beyond me. Her vocal ability, the sweet sound of her voice and the music she made (with dope producer Dred Scott) back in 1997 had all the ingredients of a legend in the making but for some unseen reason is wasn't to be. Now for those who aren't aware of Adriana but are aware of J Dilla's Detroit soulful sound I suggest you check this new mix by Omega NYC of Adriana's tunes and discover what you have been missing.

"Adriana’s debut record was, by all accounts, magnificent and groundbreaking. Often called the first "neo-soul record,” the use of live instrumentation and Adriana’s classic, jazz-infused vocals stood out amongst the more digitally-produced, synthesizer-heavy R&B music of that time."

DJ LRM - Dr. Dre The Collection

If you're not Dr. Dre fan than you just don't like Hip Hop or good music. Although there are other great producers throughout the history of Hip Hop nobody has ever matched him in consistency and quality of music (with an exception of course being DJ Premier). This collection of instrumentals of some Dre's work should be sufficient to convince those of the greatness of the DRE.

Robert Greene - Art Of Seduction

Like his previous book 48 Laws of Power Robert Greene presents knowledge that can hurt or help an individual's life based upon how one uses it. The book entails a mixture of human psychology, sexuality and manipulation. Although aptly titled this book could have been called the Science of Persuasion.

Read the book online HERE

This mesmerizing exploration of the most subtle, elusive, and effective form of power is a masterful analysis of civilization's greatest seducers, from Cleopatra to JFK, as well as the classic literature of seduction from Freud to Kierkegaard and Ovid to Casanova. Robert Greene once again identifies the rules of a timeless, amoral game and explores how to cast a spell, break down resistance, and, ultimately, compel a target to surrender. Presenting the timeless profiles of each type of seducer and the twenty-four maneuvers that will guide you step by step in the game of seduction, The Art of Seduction is an indispensable primer of persuasion that reveals the timeless power of this age-old art.

Tribute To Iz The Wiz - Crotona Park Jam

As the Prophet Muhammad once said "Death is closer to us than our own sandals" and it seems we lost another Hip Hop pioneer this past week. Micheal Martin aka IZ THE WIZ was seminal force in the graf movement in NY borough of Queens. IZ influenced many artists from that area as well as world. Even at age of 49 he still represented and influenced many of the younger generation of writers. He will be missed.

Rest In Peace
Michael "Iz The Wiz" Martin

I think it would be a fitting tribute to drop a live recording of Tools Of War park jams by Old School Radio Hour. The Park Jams held every year during the summer in NY is where Hip Hop pioneers come to bring that true school flavor to public. It is as close we can get to park jams of old. The park parties back in Hip Hop's beginning in mid 1970's.

On this recording we have the inventor of scratch himself Grandwizard Theodore from the L Brothers followed by the Universal Zulu Nation's The Original Jazzy Jay. Towards the end of the recording there is a live performance by Grandmaster Melle Mel & Raheem (And you should know who they are). This was recorded last year on July 31 2008. It was the final event of year and hosted by Grandmaster Caz.

Sage Francis - Sick Of Wasting

This is something I'm sure many Sage Francis' fans are sure to love. The new Sage Francis "Sick of Wasting" mixtape/album is available FREE through www.StrangeFamous.com . Most of tracks are new with some older and rare songs thrown in for good measure. Not exactly a best of collection but indeed something to add to your musical library.

To read more about the album read Sage’s myspace blog HERE

I wasn't sure if I would ever release another mix of this sort after the last one, but it's been a couple years since my last official album and I’ve accumulated a large number of “left over” tracks that never found their way onto an official album. I also opened up the 4-track vault this year and was able to unearth some solid material that dates back to 1996.

Made To Stick - Chip and Dan Heath

This is a great book! I read it a few months ago and it definitely will change your view of how ideas become ingrained within people's consciousness. Made To Stick is one of few books everyone MUST have in their libraries. Truly a must read. The section on the "Curse Of Knowledge" is appreciable eye opener that on face value would seem like common sense. However, as most of us know sometimes (good) sense isn't so common after all.

"Made to Stick, too, wants to unveil how people behave. Specifically, it wants to explicate what makes people care about the ideas they encounter. But then, unlike its forebears, it goes old-school. It emerges as a how-to book – very nearly a self-help book, whether for organizations or individuals – just like thousands before it, only far better. By mapping what makes others listen, it shows you how to make yourself heard."

Mixtress - Fierce Freestyle Classics vol 1 and 2

U
nbeknownst to most of you I used to spin Latin freestyle music back in the late 80's within The Southern California Party crew scene. Though we didn't call it "freestyle" we just called it dance music. I never heard the term freestyle until 1989 with appearance of the "Freestyle Queen" Lisette Melendez (What a joke! Trinere is the queen). Anyway here's a mix of by the Bay Area's Mixtress, ex-wife of Battle DJ Veteran DJ 8 ball. I have to admit however some of tracks weren't released when Freestyle was popular in mid 80's. Some of these tracks were released in mid 90's when Freestyle's popularity was waning.

Robert Greene - 48 Laws Of Power

N
ow I'm sure many of you have heard of this book before. A definite modern classic and a must for everyone's library. This is why the written word was invented....to impart knowledge for your own self-protection. Though the title is a misnomer as most of these "laws" are strategies not laws per se. But for better or worse these time-tested strategies are successful. Ever want to know why do your friends turn on you when you become successful? How do people get pulled into cults? How to turn an enemy to close friend? This and more is all in the book.

Dan Aikido - A Dan Aikdo Blends

I've seen this online for awhile but never checked into it and damn I was definitely missing out! This collection of jazzy reworked/remixes of known Hip Hop & RnB joints is pretty ill. New Zealand's Dan Aikido has a pretty good ear for mixing tunes. He has some other work floating around that I will definitely be looking into. For now enjoy some jazzy Hip Hop Kiwi style.

Neil Armstrong - Live At The Do Over

Now here's something special a Live mix by 5th Platoon's Neil Armstrong. This mix was recorded a few weeks ago on Memorial Day Weekend at the Do Over. I'm sure long time readers of DS&FL know what to expect of Neil and for those who don't experience the goodness of Neil Armstrong.

Michael Muhammad Knight - The Five Percenters

I've been searching for link to this book for awhile. This book chronicles the history of The Nation Of Gods And Earths or more commonly known as the Five Percenters. Now I can't say I endorse the beliefs of the NGE nor even the person of sometime Muslim and troubled individual Knight but this an interesting read. One of the few books by an outsider on NGE that some considered balanced and good.
Read an interview with Michael Muhammad Knight about the book HERE

Sensationalized and reviled as black America’s Hell’s Angels, The Five Percenters (also known as the Nation of Gods and Earths) began as a cluster of outcasts from the Nation of Islam’s Harlem mosque in the 1960s. Led by a man named ‘Allah’, the Five Percenters originally believed that all black men were gods. From their marginalized beginnings, their history has been charged with drama: the war between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad, the Attic prison revolt, Brooklyn turf gangs, the 1980s crack empires and now counting high profile hip-hop stars such as RZA, Rakin and Lord Jamar among their members. With unrivalled insider access to the movement’s elders, oral tradition and community literature, Knight reveals the hidden reality behind the myths, rumours and hearsay, and explores the origins and development of this misunderstood community.

Jazzy Jeff Kenny Dope - Hip Hop Forever Full Series

Here's all three volumes of BBE's "Hip Hop Forever" series. The first volume features a mix by Kenny Dope, whom is most known for his work in House music, and volumes 2 & 3 features mixes by The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff. Check the tracklisting people. You gotta admit it's good collection of classic 90's Hip Hop. The only problem I see is where's the west coast artists? Jeff could dropped some Jurassic 5, Murs or Dilated Peoples in mix. Just a minor oversight in my opinion.

The Mix Set

Bullion - Fader Mix

How do I describe this mix?Eclectic! Definitely eclectic. Those of you who enjoy unusual sounds and rare grooves would appreciate this mix but a typical Hip Hop head most probably will not. Most of the tunes are of a soul-disco-house-breakish type. This mix was done for Fader Magazine as special download following an interview with Bullion and Paul White. I didn't listen to Paul White's mix but here's link to the interview and mix for those who want check that out.
